How To Replace Your Mazda Rearview Mirror

Mazda Rearview Mirror Types
The exact type of rearview mirror fitted to your Mazda varies from model to model. There are several different types, offering differing functions:
- Manual mirrors – simple design, with a manual anti-glare lever at the base of the unit. Found on most entry-level and base model Mazdas.
- Auto-dimming mirrors – similar to the basic mirrors, but with an integrated button to enable/disable the auto-dimming feature.
- Advanced mirrors – these mirrors usually incorporate Homelink remote capability and a built-in compass. They are usually larger, have additional buttons along the sides, and also have wiring harnesses. More common in higher-spec Mazda models.

Removing And Replacing The Mirror
Whether you have a simple, manually adjustable rearview mirror or one that has a built-in compass and auto-dimming ability, the process to remove and replace it is very similar. The entire process can take as little as 15 minutes.
Tools Required:
- Thin flathead screwdriver
- Hex key set (used on certain models)
- Soft Cloth
- Most basic rearview mirrors have a base plate that clips into a mounting base on the windscreen. To unclip the mirror, you’ll need to press a thin flat screwdriver in-between the base plate and mounting base. Check out this video to see exactly where to place the screwdriver. Use a cloth to protect the windshield in case the screwdriver slips.
- If you have a mirror with additional functions (like Homelink and Compass), it may be mounted on a larger console. If they are not secured with a clip, there is usually a small hex nut that needs to be loosened. Be sure to unclip any wiring harnesses before pulling out the rearview mirror.
- Replace the broken or damaged mirror with your new OEM-spec item. For mirrors with a base clip, you will simply slide the mirror into the mounting base until you hear a click.
- For mirrors that use a hex nut, first secure the mirror into the mounting base, then tighten the nut. Reattach any wiring harnesses.
A Few Handy Tips:
- It’s best to park out of the sunlight while carrying out this task as the glare can make it difficult to see what you are doing.
- Be careful when using sharp tools around the windscreen or headliner. Place a cloth over these parts to protect them.
