Cracked, Tarnished Or Fogged Mirror
One of the most common problems with rearview mirrors is cracking. This is usually caused by inadvertently hitting the mirror with a hard object. Sometimes, the plastic mirror frame will warp from excessive sun exposure. This will put pressure on the mirror, causing it to crack. The edges of a rearview mirror can also tarnish over time. This is caused by the backing separating from the mirror due to age and excess moisture. Rearview mirrors have a silver backing. If you notice a tarnished or foggy look, it can be because the silver backing has peeled away. This is more common in areas with excess humidity.
Mirror Shakes Or Won’t Stay In Position
If you adjust your rearview mirror frequently, the mounting mechanism can wear out. This can stop the mirror from staying in place. It can also more easily be knocked out of position on rough roads. A loose mirror mount can also cause the rearview mirror to shake and vibrate. This is both irritating and dangerous, as the view through the mirror will be blurry.
Mirror Falls Off Mounting
In some cases, the adhesive holding the mirror mounting in place can dry out and fail. The mirror will then fall off completely. While this is more likely to occur in older vehicles, Mazda issued a recall on certain 2019-2020 Mazda 3 models for faulty rearview mirror adhesive.

If your Mazda’s rearview mirror is fitted with an auto-dimming feature, it will have two power buttons along the base of the mirror frame. If the buttons malfunction or the wiring gets damaged, the auto-dimming feature will stop working.
A wiring issue can also affect advanced features like the programmable Homelink buttons and the built-in compass.
