How To Replace A Mazda Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in your Mazda is likely inside the fuel tank, which is typically found beneath the rear seats. This is a common layout for most Mazda models, resulting in a similar removal process.

Items Required

  • Screwdriver (Phillips and flat head)
  • Ratchet set + Pliers
  • Cloth and protective gloves for spillage
  • Replacement OEM Mazda Fuel Pump

 Although replacing the fuel pump might seem intimidating, it's a straightforward task. Follow these steps:

  1. Remove the gas filler cap to reduce air pressure in the fuel system.
  2. Pull along the edges of the rear seat base to unhook any clips and remove it. (Some rear seat cushions hinge upwards after unbolting the front anchors.)
  3. Locate and unscrew the metal cover plate of the fuel pump service hole.
  4. Disconnect the wiring plug and any connectors attached to the fuel pump.
  5. Start the engine and let it run until it stalls to release any excess fuel pressure.
  6. Disconnect the negative battery terminal, which is located under the hood.
  7. Unscrew the circular plastic ring holding the old pump in place. Make sure to clear any dirt around the area first.
  8. Lift out the old fuel pump and replace the old gasket around the access hole with a new one.
  9. Lower the new fuel pump into place and reconnect the wiring and cables.
  10. Reattach the fuel pump service cover and the rear seat bench.
  11. Reconnect the negative battery terminal and tighten the gas cap.
  12. Turn on the ignition for a few seconds to allow the fuel pump to prime.

You may need to repeat this last step a few times until the system is pressurized and the engine starts.
